Wordpress 2.6 Upgrade Deleted Categories
Wordpress 2.6 Upgrade Deleted Categories - and fix
I’ve just did an upgrade of my blogs after a hacker added 100s of urls to almost every post on this blog and one or to others.
It was a nightmare having to manually edit each post to remove the links. I advise everyone to check the source code of their posts for any links that shouldn’t be there.
The links aren’t actually visible but are to give links back to various sites I presume owned by the hacker or someone they are working for.
I guess they figured if they aren’t visible then they’ll go un-noticed which is probably the case for 1000s of other sites out there - especially blogs were the owners no longer edit or publish to the web.
I don’t always rush to do an upgrade of Wordpress but I’ll be sure to update to the latest version as soon as it’s released from now on. Upgrading to the latest version of Wordpress usually closes most security issues.
Having did the upgrade I was horrified to find that my categories had disappeared from the sidebar of my blog as well as the Blogroll links I had added.
Apparently this is a common issue with the latest upgrade to Wordpress which has affected many people - at least judging by the posts I came across when looking for a fix.
One guy has come up with a way to manually add your categories again which can be found here. This wil fix your categories. It’s just gonna take some time to do so.
In the meantime, I have removed the categories and links section from the sidebar until I can either find the time to manually add them all back in again, or Wordpress comes out with a new upgrade which will fix this issue automatically.
Are you beginning to see why I hesitate to upgrade wordpress. Not only is there a chance that this will happen but you can always be sure that you will have to upgrade some of your plugins too which will cease to work with each new major upgrade. I guess that’s the price you pay for a high quality blogging platform.
